The JCBC Staff Blog

Tonight, we host one of the most meaningful worship services of the year at JCBC. It is our Ash Wednesday service. Tonight, we join millions of Christians around the world choosing to enter into a deliberate season of spiritual examination, as we journey steadily toward the highest point on our Christian calendar: Easter Sunday. In last week’s blog, I shared a bit of the history and purpose behind this season, known as Lent, and the unique service which ushers it in. Take a moment to read about it here. Tonight, here is what you can expect. 5:45 p.m. Pre worship music begins. We welcome guest...

If you allow yourself the time and space to consider, the weight of water could be determined in a myriad of ways. Water can be given a mathematically precise weight: “One liter of water weighs 1 kg, and 1 gallon of water is equal to 3.7854118 liters; therefore, 1 gallon weighs 3.7854118 kg, which is 8.345404487293294 pounds” (Quora). This suggests water is dense and a bit heavy. This isn’t a surprise to anyone who has carried a few gallons of water from here to there. Pick up a five-gallon container and you might think, Man, this feels every bit of...

You are marked, you know. Soul-marked…by the love of God. But that can be so hard to remember; given all the other marks we bear. Marks of our own making. Marks of our unmaking. Sin, brokenness, folly, regret. They all, in their own ways, leave marks. And with blemished hearts and smudged souls, we can forget who marked us first. And perhaps the most sinister of all marks are the ones without fingerprints. Tarnishes left with no one to blame. Disease, trauma, depression, loss. They too, smear our sensibilities and blur our perspectives. What we need is a new mark. Or perhaps an old one, re-traced. Is it any wonder why the mark...

Register now for 1 of our 2 Church-wide Dinner Events It is time now to register for one of two special church-wide dinner events in March that you will absolutely NOT want to miss. But first, a quick update on our Faith2Next Journey, thus far… The Information Phase of our Faith2Next Campaign has now launched with great success. The vision for the campaign has been shared in person to more than 800 of our members, in over 20 presentations. In addition, our campaign website, www.Faith2Next.com now serves as an invaluable (and interactive) resource for ongoing information. As awareness grows among our congregation...

For those of you who are unaware, our youth group recently returned from Faith in 3D, one of the most exciting retreats of the year, in Orlando Florida. Faith in 3D is a multidenominational conference that happens every three to five years at Walt Disney World. The weekend is designed to immerse youth from different Christian backgrounds in a united backdrop of worship, as they explore their common faith in Jesus Christ. This weekend challenged our students to contemplate God’s dream for their life through worship, education, and community building. To top it all off, we were at the one...

Our goal in January was to make sure every JCBC member had the opportunity to learn about the exciting opportunities ahead with our Faith2Next Campaign. In no less than 20 presentations, our members were invited to view our informational video, peruse our campaign brochure, and engage in conversation with leaders trained to answer any questions about the purpose and design of Faith2Next. Now all of that information is available to you through a dedicated website! At www.Faith2Next.com, you will find details about our campaign, allowing you and your family to remain engaged throughout this exciting journey. A few of the features you can expect...

By now, I trust you are beginning to pick up on the exciting buzz surrounding Faith2Next--our bold, two-fold initiative to develop our first multi-venue worship experience, and to become a completely debt-free congregation by the end of 2020. Last Sunday, we began a series of informational meetings, designed to communicate the nature of our campaign and the extraordinary opportunities God has placed before us. Upcoming information sessions are scheduled for: Wednesday, January 25th @ 6:00 pm (Room 222/B235-Follow signs outside Gym) Sunday, January 29th @ 9:00 am (Heritage Room) Sunday, January 29th @ 9:45 am (Heritage Room) Wednesday, February 1st @...

If there is one thing I would have the church remember as our nation approaches Friday’s Presidential Inauguration, it would be the same message I proclaimed on the November 6th, in my pre-election day sermon entitled, “The Poll.” Mind the trap. The trap is that slow, subtle, sometimes undetectable belief that any one person or party or political system can offer any help or hope to the hurt of the world outside Jesus, the Christ of God. What was true in the first century is true all the more in the 21st. Christ > Caesar. As followers of Jesus Christ, we must remember that our...

This past Sunday, in our 2017 State of the Church Address, we celebrated the unveiling of an exciting new campaign entitled, “Faith2Next.” More than simply a capital campaign, Faith2Next is a two-pronged effort to empower JCBC for a future with hope. Our goal is to raise 3.2 million dollars over the course of a three-year period to accomplish two bold initiatives: The development of JCBC’s first multiple-venue worship experience. The complete and final payoff of JCBC’s remaining debt. With these two initiatives in place, our church will be postured to live out our calling and expand the JCBC experience like never before. In the...

It is hard to believe, but this Sunday will mark the beginning of my fifth year as Senior Pastor of this great church. In some ways, it feels as if we just arrived yesterday. In others, so much has been accomplished together in these four years it seems as if we have been together a decade or more. As I mentioned in a previous blog, the turn of every year provides an opportunity to look back at where God has brought us, give thanks for the strides made, and then vision forward (by faith) to where God is calling us in the coming...
