Wednesday evening, May 25, 2016 was a monumental night in the life of our congregation. On that night, JCBC gathered for a special called business session to consider and vote upon the report of the JCBC Worship Study Group.
After nearly a year and a half of deliberate discernment and dialogue, the church heard the presentation and voted unanimously to approve the report and its strategic initiatives.
Included here is a link to the entire report.*
If you were not able to be in attendance last Wednesday, please make the time to read the report in its entirety. It is comprised of three major sections:
- Section One is called “The Background.” It chronicles the history of our conversation about worship and the significant milestones, moments, and movements that gave rise to an “intelligent congregational dialogue” about worship at JCBC. In essence, this section describes the “why” behind our JCBC Worship Study.
- Section Two is called “Values to Honor.” This section is a report of what the congregation shared during our Worship Dialogues in January. The data gathered from the congregation-at-large provided invaluable insight and information. This section can be thought of as the “what.” In this section, particular energies surfaced around three particular priorities: What to Preserve, What to Pursue, and What to Avoid. This is the heart of the report. When given the opportunity to speak freely about worship, this is what the church said.
- Section Three is called “Strategic Initiatives.” In this section, two specific and courageous initiatives are recommended. Each initiative has a unique set of goals described in order for the initiative to be accomplished. Taken together, both initiatives work to honor and advance the distinctive character of the JCBC experience.
With the report having passed unanimously in church conference, it is with great excitement that we move together into this new and next era of our shared life.
That is why I want to personally call upon you and members of your family to read the JCBC Worship Study Report in it entirety. Take time to consider contemplatively the remarkable story being written in our shared life together.
God is up to something good in us and among us at JCBC.
Will you be a part of it?
God’s Grace,
Shaun King
