“Love-By-Number: Transforming Relationships Through the Wisdom of the Enneagram”
Every relationship I have ever had or known could be deepened, strengthened, and even transformed with just a little focused soul-work.
Think about it.
It has long been known that life is 5% what happens, and 95% how one reacts to what happens.
The same is true for every personal relationship we have.
In marriage, parenthood, friendship, co-working, or simply being neighborly, there are always–at all times–countless hidden dynamics between us. Those dynamics (which include deeply engrained instincts of head, heart, and gut reaction) all emerge from our particular personality types, and come bundled with predictable behaviors that sometimes help, but often hurt the very relationships we value most.
What if there were a way to remain so aware, so awake, so dialed-into the hidden dynamics of our own interior life that it actually strengthened the relationships we have with one another?
What if there were a way (even after years of predictable patterns) to discover something new about ourselves? About one another? And about the Christ who bids us and binds us together?
There is.
I want to introduce you to the Enneagram.
More than simply a “personality-inventory,” the enneagram is an ancient tool for exploring the hidden dynamics of our interior world.
For me (and the entire King family) it has become an incredibly fruitful tool for self-understanding, family-communication, and personal soul-care.
See, the Christ who is alive within all of us is always calling us to crucify the false self (that shadow version of ourselves that is ego-driven and destructive), so that the true self (which is the Image of God in us) may be raised up and find fullest expression in our everyday relationships with one another.
From a Christian perspective, the enneagram offers extremely insightful help in recognizing the difference between our particular false and true selves. When that recognition begins to happen in our spiritual journey, it has the capacity to literally transform every relationship we have—with God, with others, and even with ourselves.
That is why I want you to mark your calendars now for a very special event coming to JCBC.
On February 22-23, we will be hosting a relationships conference entitled, “Love by Number: Transforming Relationships Through the Wisdom of the Enneagram.”
Joining us will be Dr. Jon and Wendy Singletary. Jon and Wendy are personal friends to Laura and to me (from seminary days long ago). Jon is the Dean of the School of Social Work at Baylor University, and is a licensed enneagram instructor, with an amazing gift for facilitating conversations just like this one.
