JCBC Family,
I have a special prayer request. Our church has a special family of guests who have been visiting our church for a several weeks. Matt and Rachel Powers, with their two great kids: Benji (5) and Nico (3). The Powers have been taking new and exciting steps toward getting fully involved. They have volunteered in our ministry and we are in the middle of conversations about joining the church. This past week, both Matt and Rachel lost their jobs within one week of each other. Matt is in I.T. and Rachel is in the Travel Industry. Please be in prayer for employment opportunities to open up. If you or someone you know can help the Powers make connections that will lead to employment for their family, I know they will be grateful and feel the love of our church. Feel free to contact them at 678-614-7306.
Your cards and letters are also appreciated and may be mailed to Matt and Rachel Powers at 4910 Yorkshire Ln

John was driven by many interests & causes in his life. Whether in his role as a student, pastor, husband, father, grandfather, educator, journalist or athlete, he was passionate in his work and devoted to those he loved & served.  His early years were influenced by his father’s work in churches around the country.

Upon retirement, John gave life to a long kindling interest in nutrition & exercise by returning to SIU to get his doctorate in health & wellness. Around this time, he started racing in triathlons, swimming & biking events in Senior Olympics, & barely a week would go by without him competing at some kind of regional or national race. All this culminated with him being the world’s first 90 year-old to complete a USATA sanctioned triathlon & earning the gold medal in the Triathlon at the Senior Olympic Games in Houston in 2011.

After his wife Nancy passed away in 1998, he met Sally Jo Johnson, who spent the next 25 years as his loving partner. He will be greatly missed by his three sons, John W., Charles L & Paul Randall, along with daughters-in-law Donna, Helen & Lisa, grandchildren Brent, Noah & Brooke & great-grandchildren Gideon & Vera. He also will be missed by hundreds of students & parishioners whose lives he touch in so many ways through the years.

A traditional funeral service will be held on Saturday May 4 at 11 am, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2461 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, GA 30305. A reception with light food & refreshments will follow. Flowers may be sent to Covenant on Friday May 3 by noon or Saturday May 4 by 10 am.
