Obituary:
Mary Rachel Greenwood Smelley, aged 97 1/2 (she was proud of that 1/2) of Chamblee, Georgia passed away on January 29, 2026. She was born on July 16, 1928, to Bert Cleveland and Ida Mabel Greenwood in Athens, Georgia the second daughter and younger sister to Catherine Elizabeth. At the age of six, her parents moved her family to Gainesville, Georgia where she lived until she met the love of her life, Carl Thomas, a WWII veteran seven and a half years older. They met on Labor Day of 1946, became engaged on Thanksgiving of the same year, and married at Easter 1947. Quite a whirlwind! It took a couple of years for them to relocate to Chamblee when Carl went to work at General Motors. Rachel always had a flair for numbers, so accounting was the perfect fit. She went to work in the accounting department of an insurance company, working her way up to Finance Manager. She remained with them until she retired…earlier than she would have liked because Carl wanted her home with him in retirement. Carl went to heaven in February of 2014 and she missed him every single day. Now they’re together with the Lord.

Rachel and Carl had one child, a daughter, Cheryl Lynne who they faithfully loved and supported throughout their lives. They traveled, joined the Lions Club, and enjoyed their grandchildren, Brittany Rachel and Byron Joseph Smith and most recently a great-grandson named Kieran Carl (named for his great-grandfather Carl).

Rachel’s daughter and son-in-law moved her to Colorado Springs, Colorado shortly before her death. She wasn’t excited to move but wanted to live with her daughter and son-in-law and be nearer to her grandson and great-grandson and his family.

Rachel joined the former First Baptist Church of Chamblee, now Johns Creek Baptist Church, in 1949 and remained a member until her death. She and Carl attended and made many friends and wonderful memories there. There would be no other place for her Memorial Service than here.

Kim Williams, GBI Agent who works security at JCBC is requesting prayers for her nephew, Luke Brown. Luke Brown is 12 years old and has been diagnosed with mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MCS), an extremely rare and aggressive pediatric cancer. Luke is the son of Libby and Tim Brown, the brother of Ella and the nephew of GBI Agent Kim Williams. Luke is brave, kind, and resilient beyond his years. Luke loves playing baseball, riding mountain bikes, being part of his school wrestling team, and playing his PS5 with his friends. Luke is facing months of intensive cancer treatment. Because of how rare his cancer is, Luke’s treatment plan includes participation in a clinical trial and specialized pediatric care at St. Jude. Luke undergoes treatment every three weeks. Surgery is anticipated in 9 weeks. Treatment will continue after. The treatment has been challenging thus far.
Your prayers are so very appreciated. Thank you.

Cards and letters for Luke may be sent to Libby and Tim Brown, c/0 Johns Creek Baptist Church, 6910 McGinnis Ferry Road, Alpharetta, Georgia 30005.
