Her name was Maria. She had prayed about receiving a new roof since September 2017 when a hurricane removed the roof on their family home. Since that awful day she and her family had made do with a tarp covering their home. A few months ago, the tarp had rotted to the point that it couldn’t provide cover and shelter, so the family had to relocate. Maria had prayed that one day a group would arrive who would help her reclaim her home. JCBC arrived in Puerto Rico Monday September 30th on a mission trip to provide a roof and we were taken to meet Maria. After introductions and a few hugs we went to work on providing this family with a roof. In record time, we finished the work in a tad over three days. Maria had a new roof. In reality, Maria had a new life. This is what we do: we go to where obvious needs are present, and we meet those needs. It’s who we are as a church.
We had time to take on a second project, so we assisted a female pastor in inner-city San Juan who’s church felt called to feed the hungry. The church was in an area that had it’s share of immigrants and elderly people and the church, post-earthquake, had taken on providing food for the truly needy. Pastor Nilka told us that her church has provided over 72K meals since the hurricane, but had a need to create an urban garden on the flat roof of the church to continue to meet the needs of her community. She had procured a grant to build the rooftop garden if she could build a staircase from the ground to the roof so access was safe. We met with her on Thursday and she told us her grant would disappear if the stairway wasn’t in place by Monday. We began construction on Friday morning, and by Friday evening, Pastor Nilka had a stairway with roof access. We meet Kingdom needs; it’s who we are.
I’d like to say we were done with our work by this time, but we received a third call to assist a family with a small roof project. So Sunday afternoon, we placed a roof on a small home who’s occupant was recovering from a bad accident.
Seven days, three projects, and a number of changed lives. And for the record, there remain close to 60K homes in need of help. So we are already planning for 2020. Our next trip will be March 18-23, 2020. Want to literally change the world? Here’s your chance.
