I have often said that it sometimes takes the soul some time to catch up with the body.
We can show up in a physical space, and yet never really arrive.
Being fully present takes time.
Especially in worship.
This is why our daily practices of prayer, silence, meditation, and scripture readings are vital.
When we practice individual worship throughout the week, it readies the soul to enter the mystery and beauty of our shared worship gatherings on Sundays.
Even when we do arrive on Sundays fully prepared to worship with heart and mind and voice, the clock is still ticking. It is not uncommon to come to the end of our congregational singing and find ourselves (only then) ready to fully feel the power of the music and the impact of lyrics written to provoke our spiritual transformation.
If only we had some time…
Maybe we do.
Tomorrow night, Thursday, March 1st at 7:00 p.m. JCBC will host its first ever Night of Worship in our Family Life Center (FLC). Then and there, in the unhurried space, our contemporary worship leaders will lead us in an evening of complete and unfettered worship.
With a full hour of music, worshippers will have the time to become truly present before God as many of the songs we sing in the FLC on Sunday mornings sweep over them, cleansing the mind, strengthening the heart, and uncluttering the soul.
Adam Courtney, our contemporary worship leader, had this to say about Night of Worship:
“More than anything else I am excited about our people getting in a room and singing their hearts out for an hour. But there’s something else. Everyone who visits our church falls in love with it. I know I did. The reason I am excited about doing this on Thursday is that it gives people who have never been here a chance to check us out without feeling like they’re cheating on their own church.”
I could not agree more! I continue to marvel at the extraordinary level of excellence we see in our contemporary worship service each week. The trouble is that our contemporary service may be one of the best kept secrets in town.
It’s time to let the secret out!
Who will you tell? Who will you bring?
Have I told you lately how much I love being your pastor?
Well, I do.

We really enjoyed being able to worship at this Worship night. It was uplifting, worshipful and we felt at home with everyone. We look forward to another Night if Worship in the future.
